Here's the moodboard I'm currently working with. right side is archaeological findings on the region and left is a mix of other native peoples and other interesting options. The marajoara might have traded with mesoamericans, so I included some Apocalypto refs.

early drafts for the characters. on the second group I felt that I needed to explore more natural materials and hairstyles that would put them closer to mesoamerica, since there's evidence of trade between them. elongated skulls were also found on marajó, which is quite unique considering other brazilian groups.
decided to go with 3 characters in order to explore more possibilities and also to establish meaning to each's jobs.
some iterations needed to bring this character closer in unity to the others. I wanted their clothing to indicate rank. to do that I brought elements from the archer to her. In that way, the commander stands out more.
